Freehold Township was one of the original three towns established in Monmouth County back in 1693. The total landmass of Freehold has since been divided up forming other townships such as Millstone, Manalapan, Jackson and Colts Neck. In addition the town of Freehold itself now consists of multiple municipalities, namely: Upper Freehold Twp, Freehold Borough and Freehold Township. Each of which have their own governing bodies and their ordinances can widely vary.

The name of the township was derived from the term; fee simple property ownership, also known as Freehold, a word used to describe real estate as a permanent and absolute tenure of land or property with freedom to dispose of it at will. In other words “full ownership”.

Freehold offers an impressive array of restaurants, shops, and entertainment as well as being home to Centre State Hospital, a private, not-for-profit health organization dedicated to offering a full circle of healthcare. Freehold is also home to the Freehold Raceway Mall, the second-largest mall in the state, and Freehold Raceway; the nation’s oldest and fastest daytime half mile harness racing track for trotters and pacers.

The Freehold Regional High School District serves students from Freehold Borough, Manalapan Township, Colts Neck Township, Englishtown, Howell Township, Farmingdale and Marlboro Township. The district holds events which pits each of the six schools against each other in a series of events. Each of the districts six High Schools offer Specialized Learning Centers. Freehold Township offers a program in Contemporary Global Issues as well as Medical Sciences. Rutgers University, in partnership with Brookdale Community College offers several bachelor’s degree completion programs at Brookdale’s Freehold Campus.

Freehold Township has several major roads and highways that run through it, such as; Route 9, Route 33 Business, Route 79, County Route 537 and County Route 522. It is a short drive to either the Garden State Parkway or the New Jersey Turnpike. Freehold is less than 30 minutes to the Jersey Shore and only a little over an hour to Atlantic City. Public transportation is conveniently available for those commuting to Manhattan and other city destinations.
